Description:
Fairly distinctive pipit with rather uniform plumage, long tail and Wagtail-like stance. Adult and first-winter have plain or only very faintly streaked upperparts and unstreaked or only very lightly streaked breast. Juvenile plumage can be retained until midwinter, and upperparts and breast are noticeably streaked.
Distribution:
Uncommon passage migrant through the western half of Gilgit-Baltistan, with some birds wintering in Diamer. Found in open dry habitats, stony country with scattered scrub, semi-desert, fallow fields and pastures. Mostly below 3500m.
Behavior:
Forages mainly on the ground, by running and pecking. Occasionally jumps up to take flying insects, such as termites; only rarely flies after prey, or hovers to find it. Primarily feeds on insects, also other invertebrates, and seeds; rarely, small vertebrates (reptiles).
